Maximising grass quality during silage season

Silage season is a critical period on farm. High-quality silage is fundamental to achieving optimal livestock production and health, especially during the winter months or feed shortages. However, ensuring consistent quality involves precise techniques across harvesting, fermentation, and storage processes. 

This guide outlines evidence-based strategies to optimise your silage-making practices each season, addressing key aspects such as moisture content, harvest timing, and anaerobic storage methods. 

 

Essential Tips for a Successful Silage Season 

Optimal Harvest Timing

To maximise nutrient availability, begin cutting silage when the grass reaches its peak. This typically occurs around 2 p.m., when sugar levels are highest, ensuring optimal conditions for fermentation. For best results, cut the grass before seed emergence, aiming for a growth period of 4-5 weeks. The first cut should ideally be taken in early May. 

Effective Wilting 

After cutting the grass, ensure rapid wilting to prevent nutrient losses. Aim for 24 hours post-cutto target a dry matter content of around 28-32%, Efficient wilting practices like spreading the cut evenly and tedding help speed up drying process.  

Cut Length 

Cutting the grass to the right length improves compaction and ensiling efficiency, which aids in achieving the oxygen-depleted conditions necessary for proper fermentation. Target a chop length of 5-6cm. 

Inoculant Use 

Select crop-specific inoculants to promote rapid pH drop and inhibit spoilage organisms, tailoring your approach to seasonal crop conditions for enhanced silage quality. 

Adequate Compaction 

Proper compaction removes air pockets within the silage clamp. This minimises oxidation that leads to spoilage as time passes. Consistent compaction throughout the clamp encourages an anaerobic environment that is required for successful fermentation, maximising yield.  

Storage management  

Maintaining optimum conditions is critical for silage production. Ensure all clamps are airtight by using high-quality covers and promptly repairing damage. This prevents air ingress, prolonging silage shelf life and maintaining nutrient integrity 

Regular feed out practices 

Limit the silages exposure to air during feed out to prevent spoilage. Utilise swift, consistent removal techniques to maintain feed quality throughout the season. 

Temperature Monitoring 

Track silage clamps temperature regularly to identify fermentation issues or spoilage early, ensure corrective actions are timely and effective. 

Layering Techniques 

When filling your clamp, ensure each layer is not more than 20 cm thick. This helps you to achieve a uniform compaction across the entire mass of the silage. This will help improve the anaerobic conditions and thus reduce chances of air pockets.  

Post-Harvest Analysis 

After ensiling, continually analyse your silage for nutritional content. It allows adjustments for future silage farming processes. As techniques improve, you should be able to enhance feed quality year after year, which will lead to healthier livestock and greater yields.
